Sutopo

Sutopo was born in Rembang, Central Java (1952). In his childhood, Sutopo often accompanied his father, who worked for Indonesia’s national forestry department. Together they climbed riverbanks and hillsides, gathered fruits, and observed the richness of wildlife.

These early experiences nurtured his deep affection for nature – a source of peace and inspiration that continues to shape his art today.

In his painting, birds often appear as metaphors for his own free spirit – soaring through vast forests, unbound and alive. This imagery conveys a powerful message about nature’s beauty and the vital importance of preserving it for all living beings. The poetic interplay between mountains and water also captures an Asian philosophy that reflects balance, harmony, and the interconnection of all forms of life.

A reserved and contemplative artist, Sutopo continues to seek solitude in natural environments where he finds inspiration and renewal. Trees, mountains, changing seasons, and shorelines serve as enduring sources of reflection – nourishing both his spiritual and artistic soul.
