Ahmad Su’udhi
Ahmad Su’udhi was born in Temanggung, Central Java, on 17 April 1958. He studied economics in high school, but went on to pursue Visual Communication at Sekolah Tinggi Seni Rupa Indonesia ‘ASRI’ (STSRI ‘ASRI’, Indonesia College of Fine Arts; now Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) from 1979 to 1986. Since 1981, he has participated in many group exhibitions throughout Indonesia, Singapore and Japan. The artist also works as an illustrator for magazines and designer of book covers. He now lives and works in Bogor, West Java.
The paintings of Ahmad Su’udhi mostly are illustrative works. They show scenes of simple and clear situations with a single theme or story. The artist intentionally avoids painting complex issues so that his works have a fixed perspective. Many of his works have children as their main focus and are aimed at youths so that they can become inspired by and be made aware of the messages in them. By paying attention to the lives of children today, Ahmad Su’udhi feels more freedom to create. He is less interested in the opinion that only good works of art have multiple themes that are open to different kinds of interpretation. “Paintings should have clarity in all of their aspects,” comments the artist.
